someone runs your pace, a few streets from home, at 6:15 tomorrow.
post a run. someone at your pace taps join. nobody learns a name, you're a jelly bean. I built it because my 6am alarm kept turning into a 9am alarm, and the only one up on my street at 6 was a raccoon, and he would not commit to a pace.
you're on the list. that was the whole form. wow.
I'll write to when your corner opens.
runs need runners. send this to the friend who keeps saying "we should run sometime". sometime is 6:15 tomorrow.
women-only, if she wants it.
a woman who posts a run can make it women-only. then only members whose ID check shows F can see it or join it. everyone else sees the mixed runs. if your ID doesn't reflect who you are, ask a person at jellybean to review it.
- onceeveryone shows a government ID and a selfie, one time, the first time they join or post a run. Stripe checks it. jellybean keeps three yes‑or‑nos: verified, 18 or older, can join women-only runs.
- who sees itnobody on jellybean. runners see your bean: a colour, and how many weeks in a row you've run. no name, no face, no age.
- no extrasno profiles, no photos, no messages. a run is a corner, a time and a pace. 11pm on the couch, phone lighting up my whole face, I go to tap my own profile, there isn't one, my thumb just hangs there like a little idiot. foiled.
a corner, a time, a pace. that's the whole post.

1post a run.
pick a public corner, a time, your pace. if at least one person shows up, you get a credit, credits are how you join other people's runs. pick a corner with something big on it, a statue, a weird sculpture, so nobody spends 6:14 circling a Tim Hortons wondering if it's the right Tim Hortons. it is never the right Tim Hortons.

2someone at your pace joins.
you're a jelly bean: a colour you pick, plus how many weeks in a row you've run. they see your bean, you see theirs, nobody sees a name or a face. dashed circles are open spots. I'm peach pit.

3run. then again next week.
post the same run every week and it's a jar: same corner, same time, a few beans, nobody named Kyle doing strides in the parking lot. your bean's number goes up every week you show up, miss a week and it starts over. mine's at 6. it's been 6 before, then one week I skipped and sat in a parked car eating almond croissants, the laminated kind that leaves a crater of almond paste you find at noon. it started over.
a list of runs near you, and nothing else on the screen. no leaderboard.

paces are named like a coffee order, the number is the real part. pick the one where you can still talk.
minutes per kilometre. lower is faster. I had this backwards for a whole summer and kept telling people I'd improved.
be first on your corner.
two kinds of people stand on a corner at 5:58am, the one who posted the run and the one doing the cold-hands bounce, then there's a third kind, jogging up at 6:03 holding a banana they didn't want. I've been all three, mostly the third. I'm opening jellybean one neighbourhood at a time, get on the list and you'll hear when yours has runs.
- browsing runs is free
- US$3.99, once, pays for your ID check. that's what it costs for everyone here to be real. it comes with 10 runs.
- host a run someone shows up to, get a credit
- credits never expire
- women-only runs, report and block never cost money

jellybean is an iPhone app for people 18 and over. it isn't in the App Store yet.
